Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 39
need to do better. It is not a report card meant to say
you are doing bad or good. It is really meant to highlight
for the organisation that is using it where they need to
focus their attention and sharpen their practices.

Q. So, if it is normal for people, or for many people, or for
significant numbers of employees, not to know when they are
eligible for pay increases, then that is fine?
A. No, it is not fine, but everything is relative. You
are asking me for precise things. I do not know the
context. It could be they may have just changed a cycle.
I do not know what is happening in the specific
marketplace.

Q. This is the international percentage?
A. But there are so many. What I am interested
in -- I have seen surveys done of other companies and the
norm, if you call it, will be significantly below in most
cases, below what McDonald's has ---

Q. That may be the case -----
A. -- which tells me that, in general, our practices are
very, very good.

Q. But we are talking about what we have in front of us.
A. So to seize on a specific number and say it is good or
bad is not fair.

Q. So you are not concerned if only 53 per cent of McDonald's
employees ---
A. Where are you?

Q. -- are aware of when they are eligible for pay increases?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is the first one under "Awards". Forget
the number at the beginning of the line because that is
just the question number in the survey, but what Mr. Morris
is putting to you, that the international norm at
McDonald's is for 53 per cent to be positively aware of
when they are eligible for pay increases, and you are being
asked whether you are content with that or not?
A. In general, I really like the English number,
apparently, that is really good. In the 50s here, I would
like it to be better. I think I had mentioned that if you
get 55 per cent of the vote in a presidential election in
the US, it is considered a landslide. So, you have
opinions of people here, and you also have different
cultures around the world.

You have people where it is in a contract, a labour
contract, you have people where it is being a handbook.
You have a variety of people. That number per se on an
average would not bother me, but I would pat the English
company on the back because that is an unusually high
number.

MR. MORRIS: OK, it does not bother you. If staff are unsure
when they are eligible for pay increases, then there is a
large amount of potential for abuse by management to delay
their pay increases, is there not?
