  Q. Do you know whether their sampling included franchisees as
       well as McOpco stores?
       A. It would include franchisees, my Lord.

  Q. Until I hear otherwise, you can work on the basis that they
had done their sampling in an efficient and expert way and
the MCD does reflect, by and large, no doubt subject to
anomalies here and there, what is going on around the
world, including the United States. I think that is the
platform you want for your questions on this topic, is it
       not?

MR. MORRIS: The sampling, the opinion survey started in the
       United States, yes?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. I think we heard that this was the first survey of its kind
in the UK in June 1994. Is that something which is
beginning to spread to other countries?
       A. If I can just give you some general knowledge: There
have been several countries that have done it in the past,
so it may be new to the UK -- I do not recall when they
first instituted using the international process, if you
       will.

I assume they have done similar things on their own, but
I will say there are large number of countries around the
world that do use that process out of Texas to give them a
comparison of how they are doing compared to other
markets. It is a rough comparison but it gives them a
sense of how they are doing.

  Q. If we look at H1 which is the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is the first page.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. This is the one that has the subheadings
       Rewards, Communication, Schedule, yes?
       A. Yes, I have that.

  Q. If we just go down the international column, does it
concern you that only 53 per cent of those surveyed say
that they are aware when they are eligible for pay
       increases?
       A. No. This is -- you cannot take hard numbers here, some
precise measure. People understand some questions; they do
not understand some questions. This is -- you get a
       general sense from this.

  Q. So we can discount this survey?
       A. No. What I would be more concerned about is whether or
not there is a significant deviation from the norm, if you
       will, the international thing ---

  Q. So if it is normal for people -----
       A. -- than if there is -- if you will let me answer --
then I think the marketplace needs to look into it to see
whether or not there is something they need to do with the
practice. The purpose of this is a tool to see what they
