Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 37

  Q. 600,000?
       A. -- somewhere in that area.

  Q. What kind of opinion survey response, if you can just cast
your mind on that? Would it be 10,000, would it be
       100,000?
       A. The problem that I have is in many cases with the
owner/operators, these surveys go directly back to the
owner/operator and only if the owner/operator wants
       some -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just take over for a moment. There is
a column on H which has "MCD"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I have been told that that is McDonald's international
       norm?
       A. I believe that is correct, yes.

  Q. What I would like to know is, quite shortly, what sort of
sample was taken internationally and then what part of it
was US sample in order to get to MCD?
       A. My Lord, I would have to get that for you. I would not
know that off the top of my head.

  Q. It was, presumably, a sample which McDonald's Corporation
thought reflected generally what was happening around the
       world?
       A. My Lord, if I can for a second? There is an outside
organisation that manages this for us, and their
statisticians and psychologists and other folks who are
experts in this kind of thing, what they do is they
determine whether or not the sample is valid or not valid.
So I have never gotten into -----

  Q. I can assume, therefore, that those experts have taken the
sample which they thought was sufficient accurately to
represent what was going on around the world, firstly?
       A. Otherwise it would be meaningless, they would not do
       something meaningless.

  Q. Including the United States ---
       A. That is correct, my Lord.

  Q. -- secondly, and since there were probably more stores in
the United States than the rest of the world altogether --
       probably, are there?
       A. Yes, there are my Lord.

  Q. It would, therefore, might well reflect what is going on in
       the States generally?
       A. You know, my Lord -----

  Q. You say you cannot help?
       A. I cannot.

  Q. Very well.
       A. We give this to the outside organisation for them to
figure out what is the best way of presenting this.
