Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 36

  Q. You would like to see it happen?
       A. Absolutely.

  Q. They do not, do they, they do not happen every three
       months?
       A. As a general rule, they do but, you know, I am not in
every store. There could be reasons why it may not happen
but, as a general rule, they do.

  Q. Let us have a look at document H1. I do not know where H1
is. Is it behind Lyn Mead?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, that is an English document.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, very useful it is too.

THE WITNESS: Are we talking England or are we talking the
       United States?

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Morris has just been asking Mr. Stein about
the practice and policy in the United States.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. Let us have a look at the document H1,
       please, behind Lyn Mead's statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yellow X, Mr. Stein, and turn to section B,
       tab 7?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If you turn to just in front of divider 8 there are three
sheets of paper, the first of which is headed "McDonald's
Opinion Survey of the United Kingdom, McOpco".

MR. MORRIS: The surveys that you do in the States, the opinion
surveys that you have done, is that something that all
       stores should participate in?
       A. No, the opinion survey process -- at least this one
here -- was originally developed in the United States for
the United States stores. Some of our markets have chosen
this approach with modifications. They modify it to fit
what they want and they change the questions as they need
to. Some countries use this, some countries do not. Some
countries choose a different method of doing it.

I think I may have also mentioned that we have moved away
from this in the US, and we are testing a new process that
integrates both the crew's opinion and the customers'
opinion so that we can see the correlation between the two.

  Q. When these are done in the States -- I understand this is
an English document -- was a significant sample canvassed
or was it just a small minority of employees?
       A. It would be a significant sampling -- "sampling" is
       probably not the right word.

  Q. Give us some kind of example. How many McDonald's
employees are there in the States, about 500,000 or
       something?
       A. OK ---
