Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 13

       A. OK.

  Q. Operations is also involved in the running of McDonald's
       stores?
       A. But my understanding was is it was a demotion. The
man, I think, originally came from Operations and was being
sent back down the line, if you will.

  Q. Do you know what his position was when he was transferred
       to the Operations department?
       A. I can only guess that it was -- I can only guess. I do
not know. I know it was a demotion, but I do not know
specifically how far down he was demoted to.

  Q. Just going back to something that had arisen just before --
we have finished with that file -- you said that the UK
       McDonald's operations system is I think -- I cannot
remember the word you used -- second to none or something?
       A. I did not say that. I said -----

  Q. What did you say, is it well-run or what?
       A. It is well-run.

  Q. Are there countries that are better run than the UK?
       A. I cannot answer that. You are talking about Operations
and the way they manage the business. It is a well-run
       organisation.

  Q. So the standards that apply in the UK you would be proud to
see anywhere all over the world in McDonald's?
       A. Sir, you are asking for a very general, a very general
question and pertaining to the entire world. I cannot
answer questions like that that are so general. In
       fairness, be more specific.

  Q. It is just something you said yesterday but I do not want
to go and check it up.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In brief summary, what Mr. Stein, as I recall
it, was saying yesterday was that he thought that the
McDonald's in the UK was well-run. He also said that there
were cultural differences and different laws from country
to country which affected the way McDonald's operated in
different countries. So, if you have a particular point in
mind, I suggest you put it to Mr. Stein, first of all, and
then ask for his comment in relation to that.

MR. MORRIS: You are concerned with human relations (sic) -- you
are the Head of Human Resources, sorry, of the McDonald's
Corporation. Is there anything about the conditions for
crew or the running of the stores in the UK which you would
be concerned with or you would criticise?
       A. Nothing that I am aware of, no, not at all.

  Q. Yesterday you said it is extremely well-run?
       A. OK. That is fine.

  Q. Does it concern you that Mr. Nicholson agreed that the wage
rates in this country are "consistently either the same as
the minimum rates of pay set by the wages councils or just
