company he was at this time. Do you know what his position
is now?
A. He is no longer an employee. He is in training to
become an owner/operator.

Q. At this time he made a statement for the purposes of this
case?
A. OK.

Q. On June 23rd 1993 when he was Vice President of Personnel
of McDonald's Development Company which had its European
headquarters in London. The McDonald's Development
Company, is that ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. I never thought I would
hear myself asking anyone not to hurry in this case, but
just do not rush your words. It will follow if you go at a
normal pace.

MR. MORRIS: The McDonald's Development Company, is that
something that is only European or is that something which
is an international kind of setup?
A. No, that was when McDonald's was setting up. I think
there may still be a person or two who is employed by that
Company, but that was primarily set up when Europe --
various countries in Europe, McDonald's was developing
various new markets, if you will, in Europe. New markets
and an early growth of existing markets where each country
did not have its own infrastructure, if you will, to
support all of the disciplines and things a country would
normally do, it was just during the -- it would be helpful
to new country development. That was the purpose of it.

Q. Not just in Europe but in any particular sector?
A. It was in Europe. I believe they covered Europe.

Q. But you had a similar setup in other regions?
A. Oh, yes.

Q. He said that he has worked for McDonald's Corporation since
September 1974, always in a personnel capacity, rising to a
Director of Domestic and International Field Personnel,
which position he held until his appointment as Vice
President of Personnel for McDonald's Development Company.
So he has had considerable experience as a representative
on the highest rank of McDonald's Corporation?
A. When you say "the highest rank", he has had a great
deal of experience.

Q. Director of Domestic and International Field Personnel must
be important?
A. Well, it is a management position, OK.

Q. He said: "As such, I have had responsibility for the
personnel functions in various countries". That was, in
particular, with the NBC. He says in paragraph 12 of his
statement: "It is true to say that McDonald's does not
allow the distribution of union leaflets in any
restaurants". What gives McDonald's the right to tell
people they cannot distribute leaflets about trade unions
