Day 142 - 26 Jun 95 - Page 32

throughout the 80s, my Lord. There were times when they
tried to do boycotts; there were times when they would
picket in front of the stores and then there would be times
they would not. The activities would go up and they would
       go down -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What you are being asked is whether you know
of matters reaching particular intensity over the period
from September 88 to May 89?
       A. No different -----

  Q. Or over the last few months before the first agreement was
       reached?
       A. No, my Lord. To me, it was just a repeat of what I had
been advised of in the past.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you trying to -----

MR. MORRIS: OK, yes. (To the witness): Have you visited
       Denmark at all since 1980?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. A number of times?
       A. I have probably been there three or four times.

  Q. Could you identify which times ---
       A. Oh, boy!

  Q. -- you have been there?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just very roughly if you can; if you really
cannot remember, say so. When was the last time you went,
       can you remember that?
       A. The last time that I recall would have been -- I have
not been there for a number of years -- I would say 1986,
1987, somewhere in that time frame.

MR. MORRIS: Was the last time that you went?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. The agreement in Denmark -- I am sure we have a copy of it
actually somewhere in Danish or something but I have not
been able to translate any of the Danish documents we have
       been supplied.
       A. I have a tough enough time with English.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not put the absolute essence of
what you hope Mr. Stein will agree with?

MR. MORRIS: All right. The actual essence of it is, I put it
to you, Mr. Stein, that the continuous union pressure
during the 80s and especially -- you will not agree with
that because you are not sure of that -- in the last period
forced McDonald's to the negotiation table and forced
McDonald's to sign an agreement to negotiate over wage and
conditions with McDonald's employees through the union?
       A. There is a lot there, my Lord, but I will try to answer
as well as I can. The negotiations in the early 80s began
with the union insisting that we agree to a sit-down
restaurant, we, the owner/operators, agree with the
