Day 139 - 21 Jun 95 - Page 20

       two to three months.

  Q. And then there is this raffle at the end of it?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. This was being played at the time -- sorry. For the
       raffle, employees can win prizes?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. This was being played at the time of the election campaign?
       A. Yes, throughout the Michigan region and other regions.

  Q. How much time did you spend at the Detroit Ralph Kelly
       stores?
       A. All told? Because I would come in maybe for a day at a
time, maybe two times, but not continuously. Are you
asking me the entire length of time I would have been
       there?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Probably two weeks, maybe a little bit more,
       altogether, from start to finish.

  Q. At that time, how many franchisees were there in the USA?
       A. Oh boy, now this is a test. Let me see. When
I started with the Company, there were 2,700. There were
probably about 4,500, 5,000 restaurants in the US.

  Q. Do you know roughly how many franchises there would have
       been?
       A. OK. 1,000, 1,200, somewhere in that area.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You meant 4,500 or 5,000 franchised
       restaurants?
       A. Total restaurants, everything; and I am doing this by
trying to extrapolate some numbers in my head and trying to
give you as good an estimate as I can.

MS. STEEL: How long had the Ralph Kelly operation been up and
       running?
       A. Ralph Kelly was a long term McDonald's operator; he had
been an operator for many years. I cannot give you
       precisely when he started.

  Q. So he had considerable experience in running the stores?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Why did you spend so much time down there with him in the
       stores?
       A. Because we were experiencing something we had never
seen before. I was trying to figure out what it was all
about, what was going on; and the union was doing something
also I had never seen before in an organising drive: going
to the media and trying to drum up community support
against McDonald's in general. They are dealing with our
       reputation.

  Q. What were they saying, then?
       A. They were calling us every name in the book.
