Day 132 - 07 Jun 95 - Page 07
I have asked my questions you will continue your
cross-examination. Next on the list, Mr. Purslow?
A. 832, para. 2.49, a general statement since -- the
appointment of a Company Health & Safety Officer has
apparently been a much clearer way of identifying health
and safety issues and a more focused approach.

Page 834, para. 2.55, some one-day seminars to brief senior
managers on health and safety issues have been conducted
recently. Those were conducted by myself. Page 836, para.
2.59, which highlights improving the level of health and
safety awareness as senior managers, agreeing health and
safety statements and so on as being key tasks for the
safety adviser. Page 839 -- well, 838 to 839.

Q. 838 specifically refers to considerable improvements in
their organisation of health and safety in the last two or
three years?
A. Indeed, and it was precisely that para. 3.2 that I was
going to refer to, my Lord. It covers a range of issues.

Q. So the matters which are set out against the bullet points?
A. Yes, indeed, those would be the sort of things that
were covered.

Q. Yes.
A. Page 843, 3.14 highlights discussions with the design
group and problems with safe access to lighting and so on
being resolved. That was an issue that we took up
directly. 318 on page 844, para. 3.18, just confirms our
work with the design group again.

MR. MORRIS: When you say it, could you say which line you are
actually referring to? It is hard to find sometimes.
A. Well, para. 3.18.

Q. The whole paragraph?
A. Well, the first part of that is appropriate,
particularly the first sentence, if you read it. Page 847,
para. 3.26, again just reinforces the work that was done on
COSHH. So there is some repetition on some of these, my
Lord. On page 855, para. 4.2, the last line, particularly,
Health & Safety Task Force also promoted monitoring by
operations e.g. the COSHH audit monitored compliance with
the new procedures.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
A. Page 858, paras. 4.10 and 11, and that just emphasises
the work that had been done on collecting statistics and
investigation systems. Finally, page 862 just refreshes
some of what we have already said in para. 5.2. That is
it.

Q. I am very grateful for you doing that work, Mr. Purslow,
that is helpful. Two other matters: The recommendations
which follow soon after where you got to, in fact, start on
864 and go through to 871, 23 of them?
A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, what page are we on?
