Day 131 - 06 Jun 95 - Page 29

  Q. Just give us your overall impression. What did you make of
it from a health and safety point of view?
       A. It was filmed, as I understand it, in the busiest
restaurants and during the busiest time, and so there is a
lot of activity and there is a lot of people whizzing back
and forwards, particularly serving burgers. However, that
tends to be in the front counter area.

The practices that I observed on the film in the kitchen
area were all in accord with McDonald's systems and with
health and safety. For instance, part of it was someone
filtering fat, and he had all the proper personal
       protective equipment on.

There was one aspect which I thought could create
problems -- and I know it is something that Jill has
identified in the past -- and that is the manoeuvreing of
roll cages into the back door of, I think it was The Strand
unit, where there is a ramp.

  Q. Is that shop where there were two chaps heaving ---
       A. That is the one.

  Q. -- a big cage?
       A. Indeed. That could be a problem. But that was the
issue that stuck out in my mind.

  Q. Why do you think that might be a problem?
       A. Because if you are manoeuvreing what is, presumably, a
fairly heavy roll cage like that, it could lead to strains,
sprains, even possibly foot injuries if somebody pulled it
       over their toes.

  Q. Did you watch the whole thing?
       A. Yes, I did.

  Q. Is there any part of it that made your hair stand on end,
from a health and safety point of view?
       A. No, not at all.

  Q. The last thing I would like to do, Mr. Purslow -- and,
my Lord, for this purpose it might be useful if he had his
statement in front of him, because it will save
cross-referencing -- is it go through some parts of the
particular comments that Mr. Purslow has made about the
       Defendants' witness statements.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Shall we take the break there? We will have
a five-minute break, Mr. Purslow. It is yellow X.

                      (Short Adjournment)

MR. RAMPTON: Your statement or statements, Mr. Purslow, are the
last but one, I think -- no, they are the last two -- in
that volume. Have you got it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Could you turn to page 11 marked at the bottom in tab 40,
where you make various comments on individual Defendants'
       witness statements?
