Day 131 - 06 Jun 95 - Page 26

MR. RAMPTON: The trouble is that, for short times, only very
short times, your Lordship is occasionally -- and I know
your Lordship is aware of it -- the net in the middle of
the ping-pong table. I cannot speak to the Defendants
directly. I deplore that kind of intervention. I will
not, if your Lordship permits me, leave it unanswered,
which is why I said what I did.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is fair enough. Anyway, can we go on
now. What do you want to say?

MS. STEEL: I just wanted to say, on the subject of wild
allegations, at one point, Mr. Rampton actually said out
loud in open court something about us deliberately
poisoning customers. So, if there is anything about wild
allegations to be made -- that is actually on the
       transcript on day 100.

MR. RAMPTON: It is a mis-transcription.

MS. STEEL: No. He did say it. We heard him.

MR. MORRIS: I was not making an allegation.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): Mr. Purslow, can you turn to the
page headed "Part B safe systems"? I only want to ask one
question about administration. Do you see, down towards
the bottom of the page, there is a section headed
       "Handling, lifting and carrying"?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. They are scored differently. There is techniques:
"Straight back, close to body, back knees. Ask for help,
if required, with bulky loads. Keep vision of path ahead
       clear."
       A. Yes.

  Q. The first of those activities gets a score of 40?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The other two get 30 each. Do you see that?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. What is the significance of that?
       A. It is an attempt to give a priority rating to those
aspects of the task which are, if you like, most important.
Obviously, the lifting technique is the keen one in this
instance, the others slightly less so.

  Q. Wherever we see a higher score, we know it is more
important activity from the point of view of health and
       safety?
       A. That is the intention. It is a slightly an inexact
science, but that is the intention.

  Q. Next, and finally, so far as documents are concerned,
Mr. Purslow, at section 55 of this file ---
       A. Yes, Mr. Rampton.
