really to one full column, half in the first and half in
the second. Then, having read that carefully, if you would
like to start reading at the beginning and then complete
       that at the midday adjournment.

                      (Short Adjournment).

MR. MORRIS: To be honest I am not going to ask anything about
       that section.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, well you did ask quite a bit. You are
probably aware from the things I have said that I read
through the transcript of Mr. Beavers. I do not think you
were being fair to yourself when on Friday you said you had
not really asked much in cross-examination; you covered
quite a lot of ground in fact.

  MR. MORRIS:  I was quite surprised when I read it last night;
I had forgotten how much we had covered. I was going to
ask a question about that particular section on employment
of black people and women, but I am not going to now.
I want to see if there is anything else on that. (To the
witness): The conditions in the United States and the UK
-- to save time -- are they, as far as you know, roughly
similar; similar kind of employment practices and policies
exist in the UK as in the US?
       A. I do not know if I am informed enough to answer that
specifically. I think when Mr. Stein gives testimony he
might be able to comment a little more specifically on the
practices and policies here in the UK. I am familiar with
the United States obviously, but I am not as conversant on
the situation here in the UK. I would suppose they are
       similar.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you aware, does any significant
difference come to mind that you do know of?
       A. None that jumps out.

  Q. One way in which it seems to me the United States and the
United Kingdom are different is that all but about 14 per
cent of McDonald's restaurants in the States are run by
franchisees, if I understood your evidence last time?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. About 14 per cent are run by McDonald's Corporation ---
       A. That is correct.

  Q. -- as their own stores, whereas it seems to me that in the
United Kingdom the proportions are pretty well the reverse
       of that?
       A. That is right. I believe it is -----

  Q. So when it comes to employment -----
       A. We employ, well there is a greater percentage of
restaurants here in the UK that are company-operated.

MR. MORRIS: But in terms of the basic practices, which you said
are similar, would that apply really the world over? There
       is a certain basic -----
       A. Our basic operating and business philosophies would be
