Day 122 - 05 May 95 - Page 18

MS. STEEL: Yes, Mr. Nicholson, why did not any explicit
instruction appear in the 1986 Crew Handbook?

MR. RAMPTON: I did not say it did not appear, I said there was
       a difference.

MS. STEEL: I am not basing my question on what you just said,
I was looking at it myself.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We had better look at it, and Mr. Nicholson
       had better look at it.

THE WITNESS: Can I have a reference?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, pink XI, Mr. Nicholson, tab 1, first of
       all, page 46.
       A. Tab 1.

  Q. Page 46 of the bundle, (f) at the top. Then, if you turn
on to tab 4, page 230 of the bundle, there is a section
       "Electrical Equipment"?
       A. Yes, there is just further emphasising it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The second paragraph is the same. There is a
larger paragraph inserted ahead of it. What might be put
to you is that if you read what is at (f) some crew member
might think that that is not directed at something which as
simple as changing a plug, whereas if they read what was
set out in 1989 -- well, I suppose the same comment may be
made there, but there we are.

MS. STEEL: There is a -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is going to sounds bit sexist because
I suppose very many women change plugs nowadays, but
you might find a typical 22 year-old man, who has changed
so many plugs, light bulbs and everything else -- it might
never cross his mind if a machine suddenly stops working
not to take the plug out and ---
       A. Change the fuse.

  Q. -- change the fuse, or see if the wiring has come away in
some way and deal with it if it has.
       A. Yes.

  Q. Even if he had been told he should not do that, he might
feel strong temptation to get on and do it anyway?
       A. I think that is why it is more heavily emphasised later
than it was in 1986, but in 1986 it is quite clear,
electrical installations and equipment must not be tampered
with. When I joined the company in 1983 one of things
I was told in the restaurant I did my month in: "Do not
       attempt to repair electrical equipment".

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, the change must have come between 1988
and 1989 because page 101, which is 1988, is the same as
       1986.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Leave it there.
