Day 120 - 03 May 95 - Page 23

  Q. It was just coincidence that you happened to pick up the
only three phone calls there were about -----
       A. Well, I was more often at Head Office than the other
two because I had other functions. I was at that time
heavily into franchising and spent an awful lot of time
interviewing at Head Office. The other two were working in
       the field.

  Q. If they were working in the field, it would have been more
appropriate for them to go really, would it not, than you
to stay at Head Office concentrating on your duties there?
       A. No, it was on the way home

  Q. What, to Liverpool?
       A. No, not to Liverpool. Liverpool was a deliberate
excursion up to Liverpool. That is a long way.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We are dodging around a bit because these
last two or three questions arose out of Mr. Nicholson
picking up the phone. If you are challenging this area,
you really ought to be asking, if that be so, why he went
himself rather than suggest one of the people who was
around the country anyway went up.

MR. MORRIS: You said the Liverpool one was a deliberate
excursion; that was one that you personally wanted to
       attend?
       A. I travelled up to attend the meeting, yes.

  Q. That is one that you wanted to attend rather than Carmel or
        ----
       A. Oh, yes, yes. Well, I wanted to attend all three.
I grabbed every opportunity I could to go to restaurants.

  Q. When there were union matters being discussed that you knew
       about?
       A. Oh, no. I attended -- they were the only three on
union matters but I attended many, many restaurants for
       other reasons.

  Q. There were a lot of grievances and issues being discussed
at that crew meeting in Liverpool, you said?
       A. There were issues. I did not say "grievances".

  Q. All right, issues regarding, you said, pay and
management/staff relations the crew, presumably, were
       concerned about, yes?
       A. The normal crew meeting. They go through a procedure.

  Q. So these would be fairly normal at any crew meeting, yes,
so in fact you could be attending at the time 350 crew
meetings every month, could you not?
       A. Why?

  Q. Because they were the sort of meetings that you like to
       attend?
       A. No, that was -- I was invited to attend that one. They
       particularly asked me to go.

  Q. Exactly, because they were discussing trades unions, were
