Day 120 - 03 May 95 - Page 12

       A. Yes, but I will accept it was -- I mean, that is just a
matter of record that it was David Sexton.

  Q. How do you know that Peter Sutcliffe's father was an
official in the Transport & General Workers' Union?
       A. I think it has already been ruled that that is hearsay.

  Q. It does not matter, I was asking you.
       A. I was told.

  Q. You were told at the time?
       A. Yes.

  Q. By the Manager?
       A. It was by the person who phoned me up. It would be
either the Manager or one of the Assistant Managers.

  Q. How long previously had you visited that store previous to
       that?
       A. I cannot remember. I had been before, but I cannot
       remember.

  Q. Was that before you were Head of Personnel; you would have
       visited that store?
       A. I cannot remember. I have been to East Ham before.
I cannot remember whether it was in my security capacity or
       my personnel capacity.

  Q. Right. Peter Sutcliffe was at that meeting, was he?
       A. I was informed he was. I did not take anyone's names.

  Q. You said: "I did not get the feeling that anyone there was
really seriously considering joining a trade union". Was
       that the feeling you got?
       A. I got the feeling that there was -- there may have been
one or two. There were one or two persistent questioners,
but the rest, it was pretty low-key. It was a very, very
       easy meeting for me.

  Q. A little bit similar to the Hackney ---
       A. Very.

  Q. -- experience; one or two people spoke up?
       A. Yes. There were one or two persistent questioners.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What sort of questions were they asking?
       A.  They were asking why we would not allow a union rep;
why they could not have a union representative; why could
they not take their membership seriously; and why could we
not have a union member in the restaurant.

  MR. MORRIS: Right.

MS. STEEL: What did you answer to those questions?
       A. I told them we would prefer to deal direct with our
crew, rather than through a third outside party.

  Q. Why is that?
       A. Because we do.
