Day 120 - 03 May 95 - Page 09
A. We shared an area in the Head Office, and I used to be
the Head of the Security Department and knew them all very
personally, and I had gone to ask him where I could park,
and he said: "I will show you. I will go down there.
There are one or two jobs that need doing, I will go with
you".

Q. I remember that, the parking, somewhere to park. What time
did you get there?
A. I think, if I remember correctly, and it is going back
to 1985, I think the meeting was at 7.00, so I would have
got there about half past 6. That stretch of Mare Street
is totally prohibited on parking.

MR. MORRIS: You had never been to the store before?
A. No

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just let me ask another question, please.
I do not want to interrupt your cross-examination too
much.
(To the witness): Did you think it might create the wrong
impression going with an Area Security Manager, the person,
for instance, who is responsible for the elimination of
criminal activity in the store?
A. No, I did not really give that a thought. I did not
anticipate he would come to the meeting. I cannot
remember, but I do not think he did attend.

MR. MORRIS: You had not been to that store before?
A. No.

Q. How do you know that parking was prohibitive in Mare
Street?
A. I did not at that time.

Q. You did not ask the Manager, or any of the staff, what the
crew grievances were that would lead them to wanting to
join a union?
A. I have just said I think I probably did ask them if
they had any particular difficulties.

Q. And they did not tell you?
A. I cannot remember any being put forward, other than
that they were pursuing the opportunity of being
represented by a trade union.

Q. But if McDonald's procedures, as you claim, allow for crew
members to pursue grievances or express grievances, why
would anybody want to be represented by a union?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is pretty obvious, is it not? The whole
point, I would have thought, of joining a union, as you, no
doubt, would be the first to say, that you have got
strength in numbers, especially if you have a big battalion
on the other side, or what you may, in some circumstances,
see as the other side. I mean, your whole point, surely,
is that they would want to join a union so that they would
have more combined strength, and that that is the last
thing in the world McDonald's want. That is your case, is
it not?
