Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 22
Hamburger U.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It was clearly filmed there ---
A. Oh, yes, absolutely.

Q. -- and you recognised Mr. Tindale?
A. Yes, and Anne Henderson and, in fact, one or two of the
people sitting in the classroom.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us wait and hear if we have more
evidence.

MR. MORRIS: The manager -- I do not know whether he was
assistant manager or manager -- Michael Metcalfe, did you
meet him? He was interviewed quite a lot in the film. Did
you meet him or had you met him in the past? You cannot
remember?
A. Which store was he in, can you remember?

Q. I am not sure, to be honest. He was the one they described
as the strong man of the store. If you remember, they
interviewed him at the Strand?
A. Oh, yes his was not a face I knew.

Q. So you do not know why he gave his notice a week later
according to the film?
A. I do not even know whether he did.

Q. There were comments throughout the film about the style of
management, and obviously we have discussed in this case,
which you have heard, all the procedures. Would you accept
that McDonald's have pioneered a kind of management and
procedures which were not generally seen in this country
before?
A. I do not have a great deal of knowledge of the
commercial world. All I can tell you is that when I came
to McDonald's, from the services I came from, I found the
management style energetic, enthusiastic, a driving
management certainly: I enjoyed it.

Q. Yes, but in terms of the actual procedures and style of
management -- I think somewhere we have Paul
Preston -- would you accept that the McDonald's methods all
round as a company have been pioneering ones that have been
taken up by others since?
A. I do not think I can answer that, my Lord. I can only
compare it with where I came from it. It certainly is a
different type of leadership to what I had.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Frankly, you came from a disciplined force.
It does not matter whether it is one of armed forces,
Police Force or any other. The police considers itself a
discipline force ---
A. Extremely.

Q. -- and completely different attitudes prevail in any kind
of disciplined force.
A. Yes, it was very new to me.

MR. MORRIS: I have nearly finished on the film. How do you
