Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 21
not the whole rap session. That was cut and cut and cut,
I suspect.

Q. So typically ---
A. I do not think there was any continuity there at all.

Q. -- if somebody holding a rap session did not follow up the
crew members comments and ask for more details, would that
be something that concerned you?
A. No, no, not at all. The rule of a rap session, a
guiding -- there is nothing written in concrete -- is that
the Supervisor taking the rap session should interfere as
little as possible. His questions should only be to deal
with things which were not clear. In other words, he is
asking for a further explanation. But, generally speaking,
all he does is invite their comment and write that down.
He does not come up with answers. That is not his role.

Q. But he does not ask for more detail?
A. He may ask for more detail. If he feels he has not got
the point or they have not put the point over, he may ask
for more detail, but that is the only condition in which he
will interfere with the rap session. The rap session is an
opportunity for the crew people to put across their
opinions on various aspects of running the restaurant.

MR. MORRIS: The training that we saw at the Hamburger
University about strokes to motivate staff, would that
relate also to -- during rap sessions you say that the
person doing the rap session is just asking the staff to
speak out. Whatever?
A. Yes, he introduces the subject.

Q. But does he also interact with the staff and make comments?
A. No, he should not.

Q. So where does the training from the Hamburger University
get put into place in terms of the emotional strokes which
the managers are trained about?
A. I am not going to be able to answer that question for a
very simple reason; I personally have only attended one
course at Hamburger University. That was the basic
Operations course. That is the first time. I obviously
saw it the last time I saw this film, but I have forgotten
it completely. I have never heard of that stroke thing
before. It is quite new to me. I do not know what it is
about, so that question should be directed to someone else;
I do not know anything about this stroke thing.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do not think the Defendants need worry
about it. Arguably, they could have put it to
Mr. Atherton, they did not, but one of the people that we
will call, if Anne Tobin is going to be a witness, is Bill
Tindale who is the chap on the film.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right.

MR. MORRIS: Can we safely assume that that session at Hamburger
University is an authentic representation?
A. Oh, I would have thought so. It certainly was
