Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 06
care -- all of those things were introduced in my day.

Q. All those matters are not strict Operations though, are
they, those matters? They are not part of the inherent job
description?
A. They would be administered by the Operations
Department. The Personnel Department is fairly small. It
is there to make recommendations.

Q. So were there any things which you recommended to
Operations which would actually improve working conditions
on the job in the stores?
A. I cannot think of one off the top of my head.

MR. MORRIS: I think now may be an appropriate moment to show
the "One Every Mile" video, if that is acceptable to the
court?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you made arrangements for this?

MR. MORRIS: It is in court; the Plaintiffs have a copy. It has
not been lined up or anything. It is at the start.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you doing? Are you going to ask
Mrs. Brinley-Codd if she would be kind enough to help you
on it? If you could ask her before we start or the night
before, if she would be kind enough to help, would she mind
doing it.

MR. MORRIS: I am sorry. I apologise for assuming that. If
there is any problem, then Ms. Steel can help.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: By all means ask Ms. Steel to do it instead
or arrange it amongst yourselves in some way.

THE WITNESS: I beg your pardon, my Lord. It is important I see
this?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Would you like to follow what we have
done previously, Mr. Nicholson? What is it called?

MR. MORRIS: It is called "One Every Mile". It is a film made
for Channel 4, I think, and we have a witness who was the
researcher for the programme, Anne Tobin.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. We are accumulating
videos. I would like each side to make a list of the
videos which they rely on, relating them to the witness's
evidence during which they were shown, and just giving a
one or two-line summary of the subject matter, so that at
the end of the day, or before the end of the day, I know
that I have them all in my mind.

MR. RAMPTON: It would be very helpful, my Lord, because, of
course, their relevance and admissibility may well vary
from one to the other.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They may well do, but it seems to me the
start is to have a comprehensive list. I do not think one
side or the other should make the complete list. Each side
