Day 115 - 06 Apr 95 - Page 30

slowly die without any further intervention. I am just
saying that it is a question of definition and what the law
actually requires. All the law requires is that the animal
is stunned but it can be reversible.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you, Dr. Long.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you. Before Ms. Steel or Mr. Morris
asks you any questions which they may in re-examination,
can I ask you about The Soil Association farms which you
have referred to from time to time?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is their primary purpose to investigate soil conditions,
quality and matters of that kind?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They are farmed with that aim in mind, are they?
       A. They are farmed with that aim in mind and also to
reduce the number of pesticides and residues in the food
that comes off. There is also in the Soil Association Code
a very strong aspect of animal welfare. They have animal
welfare codes which actually in many respects are stricter
than the RSPCA's. I must say that I am not, as a
vegetarian, of course, I have reservations over some parts
of these but I recognise they are an amelioration.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to ask questions in
       re-examination?

MS. STEEL: We have a few. Is it possible to have the five
       minute break?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, we will have the five-minute break now.
In fact, I will break off until 10 past 12 because when
I come back or when you have finished your re-examination,
I would like you to tell me how long, if at all, you want
with Mr. Bruton because then we can organise the rest of
       the day accordingly.

                      (Short Adjournment)

                    Re-Examined by the Defendants

MR. MORRIS: There are only a couple of questions, well, there
are about four altogether. There are a couple of things
we want to say, that we do not accept Mr. Rampton's
interpretation of Mr. Bowes' evidence on 3rd March, day 96.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: As I said ---

MR. MORRIS: Page 59 and 58.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- do not concern yourselves with that. It
is only relevant if something was put which was inaccurate
and a concession was obtained from one of your witnesses on
the basis of that, then you should point it out to me in
due course so that I can take it into account. Otherwise,
when looking at the evidence of the original witness, I do
exactly that. I do not look at counsel's or your
