Day 115 - 06 Apr 95 - Page 26

one gets a run off into the water supply, for instance,
       which raises nitrate levels.

  Q. One can get eutrophication if one puts too much fertilizer
in the land. We all know that, do we not; that is what you
       mean, is it not?
       A. Not quite eutrophication. That is just one example.

  Q. Too many phosphates and nitrates and you change the
character of the fauna and flora in the river, do you not?
       A. Yes, and you kill off fish and so on.

  Q. In certain circumstances you can get a degree of
       deoxygenation, can you not?
       A. Yes, that is one reason and you get algae growth.

  Q. Yes, Canadian pond weed, for example?
       A. I am not too -- I have heard of it.

  Q. Never mind.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We are getting a bit far away.

MR. RAMPTON: You and I can swap learning about rivers for ever,
       I dare say?
       A. I was not prepared to tell what a hinny.

  Q. You were not then seeking to suggest that the collection of
pig slurry in an hermetically sealed container constituted
       an immediate threat of pollution?
       A. Well, it depends where the hermetically sealed
container is. I mean, if it is taken out of that container
and sprayed across the fields, which happens with a lot of
slurry -- you see muck spreaders doing this -- then it
causes a problem. Of course, the text book answer to this
is: Look what has happened in Holland where you get a
particularly severe problem because of the particular
intensification. So, we have the problem but to a lesser
       extent.

  Q. Can I move briefly now to Midland Meat Packers and plant B
which, as a matter of fact, I think is Jarretts, both of
which are visited by Dr. Gregory? You will have noticed
       that he ----
       A. Could you just wait a minute, please, because I have a
problem here? Now I am on this file which you lent me and
       it is Mr. Chambers.

  Q. That was Mr. Chambers. He gave the evidence of general
practices and day-to-day working at Midland Meat Packers.
Dr. Gregory visited that establishment. He also visited
another one which in his report he described as "plant B",
       yes?
       A. Yes, I am sorry. I just made a few notes but I cannot
       find them now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just take a moment.
       A. Yes, I am sorry, I got into a bit of a muddle. Yes,
       here we are.
