Day 114 - 04 Apr 95 - Page 37
continue with Dr. Long, if that is necessary, tomorrow and
have Mr. Bruton here as well tomorrow or continue with
Dr. Long, if that is necessary, on Thursday and have
Mr. Bruton then. Do not bother now. What I do not want to
do is come back for two less than full days when the
evidence might all be completed in one.

MR. MORRIS: If it was all heard on Thursday, then that would
have the advantage of giving Mr. Rampton more time to look
at the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will hear what Mr. Rampton has to say one
way or the other, of course.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, because I have, as I usually do,
(inaudible) my cross-examination to a large extent, what
will help Dr. Long know whether or not he is likely to have
to come back on Thursday is whether, in fact, as Mr. Morris
asserted yesterday, he has actually read the evidence of
Dr. Gregory on pigs and cattle, Mr. Ashley Bowes on pigs
and Mr. Tim Chambers on Midland Meat Packers.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you come back on Thursday?

THE WITNESS: Yes, I could make myself available for the court
on Wednesday, tomorrow, or Thursday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: My present inclination (but I will hear
anything anyone wants to say about it at the end of the
afternoon) is that I think we should resume on Thursday
because we have Friday for overspill anyway. I hope that
would be not be necessary. If we continue with Dr. Long
tomorrow, we are committed to Wednesday and Thursday. If
we continue with Dr. Long on Thursday morning, it may well
be that one day will be sufficient for him and Mr. Bruton.
Do you have anything to say about that, Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: No. As I said, my Lord, at this stage I cannot
predicts how long I shall be in cross-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you be prepared to spend some time
tomorrow, if you were given a reading list, looking at it,
Dr. Long?

THE WITNESS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It might be helpful.

THE WITNESS: I am not sure what I am letting myself in for in
reading .....

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are not letting yourself in for anything
because all you can do is do your best to get through as
much as you can.

THE WITNESS: I will do that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is not an exam, but if you can -- if at
the end of the day, Mr. Rampton says he would appreciate if
you would read this that or the other if you have time,
