Day 109 - 28 Mar 95 - Page 15

impression by speaking to people in the industry -- well,
vets and people qualified inspecting as qualified people in
slaughter houses, and it seems to me that it is a difficult
thing to ascertain just from looking at it. I would not
rely on that. From the different stories I have heard, and
the fact that people admit it is a difficult thing to judge
for certain, I would think that was an unreliable thing,
just the visual look, and that the speed of a line of
chickens passing by at, I think, more than one second I
would not rely on it, no.

  Q. In fact, I think there is a reference on page 260 of the
       bundle.
       A. Of ----

  Q. Of the orange bundle.
       A. Which number?

  Q. It would be in tab C.
       A. Yes.

  Q. In the first column, this is paper by Dr. Gregory, "Humane
Slaughter", concerned with the effectiveness of captive
bolt stunning in cattle and electric stunning in sheep,
pigs, calves and poultry, which was published in 1991. In
the first column on that page it is entitled, "Assessing
       the effectiveness of a stun".
       A. In which ----

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: 60.
       A. Yes. Which bit were you----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have read that, so you need not take --
there we are. I have heard Dr. Gregory's evidence of the
test he made. I will just have to consider all the
       evidence in relation to this.

MS. STEEL: Yes, that was in reference to the point about MAFF
making their decisions on the basis of visual observations
       rather than any other point.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: While we have got this, is there anything else on
       slaughter you wanted to add?
       A. I would just like to draw attention to -- it is in
another of Dr. Gregory and Mr. Wotton's papers. This is
the earlier one that I have here, "Effect of Slaughter on
the Spontaneous and Evoked Activity of the Brain", received
for publication April 1985. It is British Poultry Science
       ----

MS. STEEL: It is tab L.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What date is yours?
