Day 108 - 27 Mar 95 - Page 33

just see it anyway rather than showing it in advance.

MR. RAMPTON: Given the experience of this, lack of it, I should
say, I do not think there is really anything controversial
about it. I do, however, wish that documents, videos or
other documents, which are in the possession of a so-called
expert who has had a statement in the file since July of
last year or the year before could be disclosed in
reasonable time before the witness is here and, indeed,
       before my witnesses are called.

  MS. STEEL: I am sorry.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, due apology was given. I think the best
thing is if I just see it through anyway.

MS. STEEL: Are you happy for it?
       A. Yes, there is one mistake in it which I will -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me about that now?
       A. It says "genetic engineeering" which it is not, it was
genetic selection. That was before I was aware of that, I
       am afraid.

MS. STEEL: When was this video made?
       A. I think 1986, I am not totally sure, but that sort of
       time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you mind, Mrs. Brindley-Codd, operating it
       again?
       A. Some of the quality is not perfect because we did it on
       the cheap.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us see it first. Would you like to come
and sit down at the front again?

                      (Video recording played)

MS. STEEL: The chickens that were shown at the end of that and
also throughout, but on the blue material, on whatever it
was, that were used to compare, where were those chickens
       from?
       A. I think those came from a slaughter house in South
       Yorkshire.

  Q. Do you know where they have been reared?
       A. I think, yes, it was attached to the slaughter house.
       It was a complex, I think -----

  Q. A commercial broiler?
       A. Yes, a commercial broiler unit, yes.

  Q. Although I think it was on the film, why do you think the
birds that you reared from chicks were 25 per cent lighter
       than their commercially reared counterparts?
       A. Well, they had no growth promoters and it has been very
hard to find, in fact, impossible to find out what is the
expected additional growth from the growth promoters. I
have heard very varying stories. So, obviously, it was
partly to do with that or if they were not efficient they
