Day 103 - 14 Mar 95 - Page 05

because I am going to Holland that day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. What about Thursday?

THE WITNESS: Thursday could be arranged, but it is really very
inconvenient but I could at a push.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If we have not a lot more of Dr. Pattison
left, I am really quite keen to get it finished, then
Dr. Pattison can go and forget all about McDonald's v.
Steel and Another. I am sure that attracts you,
       Dr. Pattison!

                     DR. MARK PATTISON, recalled.
             Cross-examined by the Defendants, continued.

MS. STEEL: (To the witness): Just on going back to food
restriction in the broiler breeders, you get chickens from
       Cobb?
       A. We do.

  Q. They refer to skip a day feeding and five days a week
feeding in their Breeder Management Guide?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that something that happens at Sun Valley?
       A. No, it is not.

  Q. You do not use either of those?
       A. We do daily feeding.

  Q. The weight of a male broiler breeder at about seven weeks
would be 2.4 pounds, would it not?
       A. If that is the figure quoted there, yes.

  Q. That would be right?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What would the weight of a male broiler be in pounds at
       that age, at seven weeks?
       A. About six pounds.

  Q. So the breeders are less than half the weight?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They need to be that weight in order to -- that is true for
the females as well, is it not, that they are less than
       half the weight?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They need to be that weight in order to perform the natural
       breeding functions?
       A. Yes, that is one of the reasons.

  Q. So, in actual fact, the broilers -- not the breeders, the
broilers -- are grossly overweight for what they would be,
       you know, to survive naturally?
       A. In comparison to the breeders they are much heavier,
       yes.
