not specifically get involved with that routine.

Q. Your responsibility for the veterinary and technical
service of the company, what does that include then? That
is not overall responsibility for welfare then?
A. I do have -- I have responsibility for welfare in its
broadest sense in the setting of policy, the setting of
direction, the setting of standards. I do not, as I have
said before, have to necessarily be involved in the
day-to-day administration of that policy which is down to
area managers and supervisors to take responsibility for
that. It is also very much down to individuals to take
responsibility for animal welfare within the overall broad
context.

Q. So there is nobody who overall checks up on welfare ---
A. The checks ---

Q. -- specifically?
A. -- on welfare, as you have heard this morning, if it is
the catching team specifically, the responsibility is with
the foreman and the supervisors. If it is on farm, it is
the area managers, the farm managers and the workers
themselves that are responsible for doing that.

Q. But the area managers do not report to you?
A. They do not report to me, but -----

Q. About the welfare conditions?
A. Not specifically, unless there was anything
particularly that they wanted to discuss.

Q. So there is no-one on management that has overall
responsibility for checking on the welfare of birds?
A. Every individual manager who is involved at the farming
operation has welfare as part of their responsibility.

Q. But there is no manager with specific responsibility for
that?
A. No, welfare is part of overall farm and stock
management.

Q. How many area managers are there?
A. There are I think probably four area managers.

Q. How many of the farms that supply Sun Valley have you
visited?
A. Over the years I have visited most of the farms, but
there are still one or two that I have not been to,
particularly smaller private growers, maybe some of the new
ones I have not been to.

Q. It is more than one or two?
A. Yes, it will be several.

Q. 20, 30, 40 or 50?
A. I could not say. I should think it is maybe 15 or 20.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Out of?
A. Well, I think we have something like 150 private
