Day 092 - 27 Feb 95 - Page 25

       A. From pesticides, could be. In US, and I remember the
facts, in the United States there has been an extensive
research into the cause of illnesses. There is not a
single reported case of anybody dying from pesticides. The
only report in foods, found in foods, there are two deaths
that were caused by people actually consuming the pesticide
itself that came from the cans, and they were some kids who
found it and drank it. Those are the facts.

  Q. So, if the National Research Council does say those things,
it is not something that you have looked into or made
       yourself aware of?
       A. That is fine.

  Q. What are the antibiotics that are regularly used by ---
       A. The risk?

  Q. -- regularly used by the people in the feed lots?
       A. It depends on the -- they are not heavily used. It
       depends on the practices again.

  Q. That is something that has decreased over the years, is it
       not, over recent years?
       A. Yes, it has.

  Q. Is it right that in 1988 more than 15 million pounds of
antibiotics were used as feed additives for livestock in
       the United States?
       A. No, I do not know the numbers.

  Q. That would not sound way out to you, though?
       A. I do not know the numbers. You also have to keep in
mind that there is a lot of cattle in the United States.
It is one of the major cattle producers in the world. It
       is all relative.

  Q. So, say, seven years ago antibiotics would have been much
more widely used than they are now?
       A. They are more widely used, yes.

  Q. Widely?
       A. Widely, yes, but I would not say much more. They are
also controlled by the United States Department of
Agriculture they use the withdrawal periods, and there is
no data that shows -- all the data shows they have no
       impact on human consumption.

  Q. How frequently would they be used in cattle feed lots?
       A. How frequently?

  Q. Yes. Are they used in the feed, for example?
       A. Yes, it could be daily, it could be once a week. It
       depends on the management practices.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are they used in feed? That was the specific
       question.
       A. Yes, they are.

MS. STEEL: The same would be true for poultry, we have heard
       from -----
