Day 091 - 17 Feb 95 - Page 11

       serves more than one purpose?
       A. I think there is a greater prevalence of certain types
of disorder and it is very difficult to say that one type
suffers more than the other because they actually get
       different disorders.

  Q. What I was leading up to is this, can one say there is a
greater concern about about leg problems in broilers
because they are bigger birds and there is a greater weight
to be carried by their legs, or is that a gross over
       simplification?
       A. I think it is certainly true to say that, but it is
rather oversimplifying the fact because egg layers can
       suffer from other disorders.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

            Cross-examined by the Defendants, continued.

MR. MORRIS: Dr. Gregory did give quite a lot of evidence on
       that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I wanted to know what Dr. Pattison's view is.

MS. STEEL: When you are talking about egg layers suffering from
other disorders, is that particular disorders that battery
chickens suffer from as a result of having to lay so many
       eggs?
       A. The condition of osteoporosis in egg layer chickens
which are kept in battery cages is a well-known condition.

  Q. You said that there is a greater prevalence of certain
types of disorder in broiler chickens. If we look at
comparable age groups, would there be a much greater
incidence of leg problems in broilers than there would be
in a farmyard chicken, for example?
       A. If you are comparing age for age, yes, there are more
       leg problems in broilers.

  Q. Considerably more?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Could you get Gregory's orange bundle, but I am not sure
       what number it is.

  MR. RAMPTON: V.

MS. STEEL: Thank you, bundle V. If you could turn to tab J,
please? If you look at page 193, the chart on the top of
the page, and if you look at the breeds on the right-hand
       side?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You see "breed D"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Has a much lower prevalence of leg problems?
       A. Yes.

  Q. It has got very low gait scores. If you turn to page 192,
