Day 090 - 16 Feb 95 - Page 07

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Then there is an easy way of dealing with it.

MR. RAMPTON: Can I add to that, the reason I stood up was that
I think I have already said, that a legible copy -- I agree
about page 80 -- of page 80 is at appendix 5 to Mr. Keith
Kenny's statement in the yellow volume VII at tab 1.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: That was it. It is legible in Mr. Kenny's one, that
       one page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: One way or another, I hope you can have
legible copies of all five of those pages.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. We will try to get 67 and 68 from
McDonald's, see if we can get a better copy.

                   DR. MARK PATTISON, recalled
                 Cross-Examined by the Defendants.

MS. STEEL: What percentage of the chickens slaughtered at the
Sun Valley plant are from company-owned broiler houses?
       A. About 20 per cent are from company-owned houses, about
80 per cent from private farmers who are on contract to Sun
       Valley.

  Q. Those are the only two sources of the chicken?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. How many units does the company own?
       A. The number of actual housing units within the company
is probably something over 550, I would guess, and as I am
saying 20 per cent of them are company-owned, 80 per cent
       of them are contract.

  Q. So those 550 are not all owned by the company, you are
       saying?
       A. That is what I have said.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It would be about 110 company and 440
contractors, if your figures are correct?
       A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: Is a unit just one broiler shed or is that something
       more than that?
       A. A unit of housing is one broiler shed, one shed.

  Q. Right. How many birds are kept per shed?
       A. For broilers, we normally have 20 to 25,000 in a modern
shed. Some of the older sheds are smaller and, therefore,
       do not house so many.

  Q. What size will the modern sheds be then?
       A. The standard shed is 14,500 square feet.

  Q. The older ones?
       A. They can be any size down to ones that will hold
       approximately 10,000 birds.
