Day 078 - 26 Jan 95 - Page 36

  Q. So, it is not unheard of that cattle can be shipped great
       distances even when live?
       A. In the context of shipping cattle, breeding cattle,
yes, they are shipped long distances. Do not try to say
they ship cattle to Barretos because it is a long way from
       the sea!

  Q. No, I do not mean shipping; I mean "transport" cattle. It
is not unheard to transport cattle a great distance?
       A. You mean by road? I cannot follow -----

  Q. By any system?
       A. Well, I mean, yes, but you have got regulations and
rules in Europe which tell you how long cattle can travel.
You have practical situations and reasons by how far cattle
can travel. But I do not think cattle ever would travel
2,000 kilometres, and I have never known of an example of
cattle travelling 2,000 kilometres by road. I have never
heard of it, in my experience.

  Q. What about by rail or by air?
       A. By air -- only breeding cattle. Breeding cattle will
fly transAtlantic, but we are talking about cattle with an
       immense value, sterling value.

  Q. What about by rail?
       A. The only cattle I have ever known transported by rail
(and it is a long time ago) were Irish cattle coming down
to the London area from Macfarlanes of Birkenhead, shipped
off the north wall on a Wednesday and pitched into London
       on a Thursday.

  Q. So when you came back from -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause there for a moment, Mr. Morris. I
would like to break off there unless there is a question
you must ask before the adjournment?

  MR. MORRIS: No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will resume at 2 o'clock.

MR. MORRIS: Can the witness be asked not to discuss -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Do not speak to anyone else about this
case or anything to do with it, please, Mr. Walker.

                      (Luncheon Adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: Thank you for the extracts. I am sorry to be
       unappreciative at the time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, it is for any future reference.

MR. MORRIS: When you were in Brazil when you asked questions
about the source of the Vesty's Barretos beef, what was the
actual question you asked; what were you asking?
       A. I cannot, as you realise, remember the exact questions
but I was just searching to prove and be very clear in my
