Day 076 - 18 Jan 95 - Page 15
A. I had that photograph of Royal Avenue that was -----

Q. OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Might I suggest before you go on to any
specific conversations with anyone who might have had
anything to do with McDonald's -- what you have been asking
Mr. McIntyre about is 1994 -- would you like to ask him to
compare that with previous years?

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I suggest you might go back to -- was it 1989
they came? I have forgotten the date.

MR. RAMPTON: May, 1991, my Lord.

MR. MORRIS: Just before I ask that, can I just ask about other
identifiable environment/index.html">litter? Has any other source of environment/index.html">litter become
noticeable to you?
A. Well, we get the Haagen Dazs which is right at the end
of our street, the ice cream shop, we get cartons from that
and napkins from there but nowhere near the same
quantities, of course.

Q. What about any other source?
A. Well, we used to get the leaflets, the Scissors
leaflets, and of course you get the ordinary bits of street
environment/index.html">litter, you know, Evening Standard or just blown in stuff.

Q. Is the McDonald's environment/index.html">litter in your street a significant ---
A. Oh, yes.

Q. -- percentage?
A. I mean, you know, it is hard to estimate but I suppose
if I said, if I had to estimate, I would say 70 per cent
was McDonald's, 10 to 15 per cent Haagen Dazs and the other
15 per cent anything from the leaflets that people stick on
motors cars and get thrown off to parking tickets thrown
away by motorists and so on.

Q. This picture of what you have seen, how does that compare
to previous years?
A. Well, when McDonald's began they used to pick the
environment/index.html">litter up. There were environment/index.html">litter patrols two or three times a
day and, you know, the environment/index.html">litter did not stay very long. But
in 1992 when they stopped their environment/index.html">litter patrols or trash
patrols, I would say it was much the same, 1992, 1993 and
1994.

Q. When you say "environment/index.html">litter patrols", you say two or three times a
day, how did you notice them?
A. They wore McDonald's leaflets -- uniforms and one
recognised them, yes. They were in uniform.

Q. If they had not worn a uniform, would you have noticed them
at all?
A. I know our own street cleaners. The Council has a
privatised company -- I think it is BFR now -- and they of
course have street cleaners who come down the street
