MS. STEEL: You were interviewed for this article, were you
not, is that right? You are quoted in it.
A. I am not sure what the article is.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is it The Independent, 1st February 1992.

MS. STEEL: That is right, yes, sorry.
A. I was interviewed by The Independent, yes.

Q. Over in the right-hand column ---
A. The far right?

Q. -- the far right, yes ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- just round about where the bottom of the picture is,
there are some figures about chicken?
A. Right.

Q. Could you just read them?
A. OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where it says 91 something million chickens,
what is that?

MS. STEEL: A quarter.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 91 and a quarter.

MS. STEEL: You have read that?
A. Yes, I have.

Q. Do you know whether you gave those figures to
The Independent?
A. I do not recall the 91 and a quarter million. It is
not a number I am familiar with, so I do not think I did.

Q. So do you know whether they are right or not?
A. I cannot say. What was the date of this?

Q. 1992.
A. I would need to check back; I really cannot say.

Q. Above there, it is just above the block that is in big type
face, it says: "As the journalist was leaving Hamburger
University, you were about to see a deputation from the
Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's new marketing
task force which is liaising between the food industry and
British farmers in an attempt to help farmers produce what
is wanted by industry", was that right?
A. Yes, that is correct.

Q. Then it talks about: "If the task force has done its
homework, it will have known that McDonald's already uses a
good deal of British-produced or processed food". Then
that is where it gives all the figures.
A. OK. Down to "British produced or processed food", that
is certainly correct. The figures that follow, I cannot
vouch for and I would need to check them.
