  Q. What did the actual local councils do in Switzerland?
       A. I could not tell you because that was before my time.
       It started before my time.

  Q. I believe at one time -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is my recollection correct that it was in
Switzerland that the study was made?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, I think it was in Schaffhausen which, I
think, is on the border of Switzerland.

MR. MORRIS: Is it true that in one canton there was even a
referendum on the use of disposables?
       A. It could have been.

  Q. In Switzerland?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Was it a Swiss National Referendum?

MR. MORRIS: It was a Regional Referendum, as far as I know. It
may be useful to McDonald's Environmental Newsletters, if
I can find where they are, volume 47.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know the answer already because you
could just put it without looking at a document, if you
did; if you know it is a referendum of 1,000,000 people or
       100,000 or 150.

MR. MORRIS: The Canton of Schaffhausen: Public Referendum on
in the canton of Schaffhausen on 2nd January 1991.
Thinking about it, is that -- it is in tab 47, page 710.
       A. OK.

  Q. This is the McDonald's Environmental Newsletter for Europe,
       May 1991?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Over the page it has got McDonald's Response to this
Referendum. Do you recall this situation now, having
       looked at it?
       A. No, because I was not in the company at that time.
I recall having read about it afterwards but I was not
       involved in that.

  Q. What do you remember "when you read it afterwards", what
did you remember was the outcome of the referendum and the
       issue, from what you recall?
       A. I thought it was defeated.

  Q. It then goes on over the page on 711, McDonald's response
to counter the move, they say, and it is a whole range of
things; stepping up environment/index.html">litter patrols/sponsoring of public
       trash bins.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Wait a minute "stepping up environment/index.html">litter patrols",
yes. Why do you not ask if the witness knows whether
