Day 061 - 05 Dec 94 - Page 42

McDonald's, you do not monitor the environmental effects of
       producing that meat?
       A. No, not of the meat produced, no.

  Q. In terms of, for example, the amount of sewage produced or
the methane given off from -----
       A. No, not at all. The supplier would but McDonald's does
       not.

  Q. You do not?
       A. No.

  Q. What about in terms of social, what is that in relation to?
       A. Again McDonald's would not be directly involved -- the
       supplier would.

  Q. Right, but what does "social" mean in this sentence?
       A. Well, I think they are talking about the social
environment as distinct from environmental that we were
talking earlier that the animals are raised in.

  Q. To be fair, this first section is not specifically about
animals but it is just that I am asking you about that at
       the moment.
       A. OK.

  Q. But the "social" does not apply to animals then?
       A. Well, it marginally does but only marginally. The
animal welfare, we have talked about fairly extensively
previously. The way McDonald's would get involved in terms
of animal welfare is through the quality assurance
department and -- I mentioned last week -- the unannounced
visits they would make to check that what the inspectors
and the veterinary officers say is happening and the
suppliers say is happening is, in fact, happening. So, as
far as McDonald's is concerned, it is a random check on
       animal welfare practices.

  Q. I think you mentioned Mrs. Crawford going down to Sun
       Valley Poultry?
       A. I did. I did mention Sun Valley specifically but other
       suppliers too.

  Q. So Mrs. Crawford goes around, what, all the slaughterhouses
       that supply McDonald's, does she?
       A. No, she does not, to be perfectly honest. At Sun
Valley it is one and the same site, so every time she would
go to Sun Valley, she would certainly go through and check
       the slaughtering operation.

  Q. You said that there had been a number of occasions when she
had actually stopped the slaughter line?
       A. There has been a couple, to my knowledge, when she
stopped the line, yes. There may have been more, I am not
sure, but there certainly have been a couple, to my
       knowledge.

  Q. Why was that?
       A. She did not think that in each case the stunning was
       adequate.
