Day 061 - 05 Dec 94 - Page 39

takes most of the rubbish from London provides enough fuel
from methane to supply 30,000 people. I do not know
whether that is true or not. I only mention it as an
aspect that methane may or may not be a problem. Clearly,
it creates methane, but whether the methane is then a
problem is maybe another issue in itself. That is all. It
may save energy which would have to be obtained in another
       way.

MS. STEEL: At the landfill sites that McDonald's waste ends up
in, are you aware of any projects to make use of methane
       given off by decomposing waste?
       A. I am neither aware that there is any methane or that
there is any project to use it.

  Q. Would you recognise that if the methane is not collected in
some form and then made use of it would be a problem?
       A. It would certainly make sense to use it if it is there.

  Q. Yes, but if it was not collected, would you accept it would
be a problem in environmental terms?
       A. I am not quite sure -- problem in what way?

  Q. In contributing to greenhouse gases, as is stated in this
       document "Let's get growing America"?
       A. OK, if it contributed to greenhouse gases, yes, then I
would accept that, if it was not reused for some other
       purpose.

  Q. Right, but McDonald's has not taken any steps to find out
whether the methane is used ---
       A. No, we have not.

  Q. -- at the dumps you make use of?
       A. No. Have we finished with this?

  Q. Yes. Your animal welfare policy, McDonald's animal welfare
       policy ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- when did you say that this came into effect?
       A. I am not sure what I said when it came into effect.
       I know what it is.

  Q. So go on, tell us what is it?
       A. It basically makes sure that slaughterhouses and
abattoirs and breeding farms conform to the country code of
practice and the industry standards for both the UK and the
European Union as it relates to slaughtering, husbandry and
       transportation of animals.

  Q. Right. So your animal welfare policy is, in fact, just a
policy to comply with the laws of the various countries in
       which you operate?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. Right, you do not remember when it was introduced?
       A. I remember the first time we published it.

  Q. That was in the Fact Book, I think?
