Day 060 - 02 Dec 94 - Page 10

is it, wait for Mr. Preston, if you like, or some other
       witness.

MR. MORRIS: I will not dwell on it for a long time. In that
article there are a number of points: Obviously, the one
that was immediately relevant was about plans for 100
restaurants to be brought into a recycling scheme expanding
to 381 by the end of the year. Had you heard of that idea?
       A. No.

  Q. Also, it is quoted about the abandoning or drastic
limitation anyway of polystyrene use in this country.
First of all, has that been discussed in this country?
       A. When the US got out of polystyrene, it was discussed
and considered and decided that the UK did not have a
landfill problem and would stay in polystyrene and would
try and further the recycling of polystyrene, which is what
       we did.

  Q. So, when it says: "The UK restaurants intend to follow the
US example of withdrawing most polystyrene use", that word
"intend" you are saying is, in fact, untrue?
       A. It actually says, "The UK restaurants intend to follow
the US example up to a point".

  Q. Yes. "'Expanded polystyrenes may disappear', said
       Mr. Preston".
       A. "May disappear".

  Q. "But 'we will not be abandoning all plastics'. Plastic
cutlery and straws are likely to be among the survivors",
implying that some large amount of polystyrene use will be
phased out. Do you know of any plans or intention to do
       that?
       A. No, he may have been implying that. I do not know that
he was, but I do not know of any intention, no.

  Q. I think we can leave that one. I think this will be the
last item on this particular issue. If we look, there is
another document here which is Defendants' document
No. 46. It will be in that one you had yesterday.
       A. What colour is that?

  MS. STEEL: Kingfisher blue.

MR. MORRIS: It includes No. 46. If you look at document 26,
sorry, page 33 of those documents. It says: "Burger box
binned" article. It is the Daily Express, DE, Daily
       Express of the -----
       A. What tab number?

  Q. It is 33 internal number of the 46.

MS. STEEL: I do not think that is actually on your copy. It is
tab 46 and it is the fifth or sixth one from the back.
       A. What is the heading?

  Q. "Burger box binned".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you get to the front of the Nation
