Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 15
A. Well, we believe that McDonald's food should be part of
a balanced diet. We have never advocated that people
should only eat McDonald's food, and we try to give advice
through that leaflet as how a diet can be balanced.

Q. Have you heard the expression, Mr. Oakley, "healthy food"?
A. Yes.

Q. Have you heard of its counter part "unhealthy food"?
A. Yes.

Q. Do those expressions convey anything to you and, if so,
what?
A. I think they convey a perception, and I think it is no
more than a perception, that food sold in a health food
store is healthy and food served in quick service
restaurants is often termed as "junk food".

Q. So far as McDonald's food is concerned, do you have any
sense that it is unhealthy or junk food?
A. Not at all.

Q. When the leaflets are being prepared, who writes the text,
who writes the text of the leaflets?
A. This is generally done in conjunction with the people
working in the Communications Department on advice from
nutritionists that we employ as consultants.

Q. I am going to show you some more of that in more detail in
a moment. Can you turn to tab 5 next, however? This one,
as again one can see, was printed in July 1989?
A. I have ----

MS. STEEL: Tab 5.

THE WITNESS: -- I have October 1985.

MR. RAMPTON: That is my fault, 6: "McDonald's Food - the Facts"
and right at the back, not the last page, it should have a
stamp at the bottom "39", do you see, just before tab 7?
A. Yes.

Q. Date of print, July 1989?
A. Yes.

Q. Again I ask my question in this way: Was it possible in
July 1989 for a member of the public to get hold of this
document?
A. As I said to you earlier, I was not involved with the
department at that time, but I believe it was possible,
yes.

Q. If I had wanted one in those days, how would I
have obtained my copy?
A. I believe on application to the Communications
Department.

Q. Now please turn onwards, if you will?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment, please. When
