6 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have a sheet which is various conversion
7 calculations and an addendum to Mr. Mallinson's statement
8 which is dated today, 30th November. Have you a copy?

10 MR. MORRIS: We just got a copy about a minute ago.

12 MR. RAMPTON: It is what your Lordship asked us to do.

14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. It is probably helpful if we just read
15 that, is it not, and have a look at it?

17 MR. MORRIS: I have only one copy. (Pause).

19 MR. JUSTICE BELL: How do you suggest we approach this,
20 Mr. Rampton? I asked for the information, I have to say,
21 because for the first time during Mr. Morris'
22 cross-examination it appeared that in due course he might
23 argue -- I do not know whether this is Ms. Steel's case and
24 his -- that in so far as there are figures like 800 square
25 miles, it is not what is actually being chopped down in any
26 one year, it is what is required in order to provide year
27 by year. At the end of the day, if that is argued, I may
28 or may not decide that that is a meaning which the words
29 actually bear, but one has to face the potential argument.
30 Therefore, subject to anything Mr. Morris and Ms. Steel
31 say, I would like some evidence like this in because at the
32 end of the day it might be helpful to me one way or the
33 other.

35 On the other hand, I readily confess that it took a bit of
36 thinking before I understood the calculations in
37 Mr. Mallinson's original statement. I am not at all
38 confident I understand everything which is here. That is
39 the first thing; the second is I am not quite sure what is
40 Mr. Thompson's contribution and what is Mr. Mallinson's
41 contribution among it.

43 MR. RAMPTON: Of course, I understand that. Naturally enough,
44 I prefaced this topic with the observation that that
45 interpretation of the leaflet might be appropriate had it
46 been a specialist forestry application. But, my Lord, that
47 is in the future. May I suggest the best thing is if your
48 Lordship takes it up with Mr. Mallinson. It was your
49 Lordship's question. I did not ask any questions in-chief
50 and if I have to come back in re-examination, so be it, but
51 at the moment I do not foresee any likelihood of that. If
52 your Lordship should wish Mr. Mallinson to explain how it
53 works and which is his contribution and which is
54 Mr. Thompson's, although I think one can see from the type
55 face probably which is which, then I suggest your Lordship
56 asks him to explain, if that is all right.
