much natural regeneration as is practicable on each site.
They have done that for generations really.

Q. I am just trying to establish the official position. Has
France adopted these kinds of statements; if so, do you
know when?
A. France again manage their forests very specifically
region by region, community by community, and have had a
very long tradition of forest management. Exactly when
they signed any document in relation to this, they have
been participant in all the conferences you have referred
to.

Q. Germany -- do you happen to know?
A. Very similarly, with a strong environmental concern
right the way through, the way Germany operates its
industry and its forest industry as well.

Q. Yes, but do you know if they have adopted this kind of
formal position on sustainability and biological diversity?
A. I think each nation in turn is adopting the
international stance. Prior to that there were very much
more local considerations of what was acceptable and what
was not acceptable. That will vary according to the type
of forest.

Q. Do you happen to know in Italy any time-scale?
A. No, other than their involvement equally in all these
international conferences.

Q. Such as Rio and Helsinki are the main ones, basically?
A. Indeed.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you referred to the accord a little
while ago and I asked if you had a copy, was that just
Canada or world-wide?
A. No -- well, yes, it was the States, the provinces of
Canada, agreeing at ministerial level, their forestry
ministers -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, that is all I needed to know.
A. That was, essentially, a Canadian accord.

MR. MORRIS: Finally, on your list of countries, Czechoslovakia
or the Czech Republic, do you know if they have adopted
formally these kinds of principle?
A. They have been participants but, as you will
appreciate, the Czech Republic has emerged in the
time-scale we are talking about and, therefore, their
Ministry of Agriculture which is responsible for forestry
have adopted principles which they are capable of coping
with within their own country and they have certainly been
participant in the international conferences.

Q. They are signatories, are they, of these resolutions, do
you know that?
A. I would have to establish that as a specific point as
to whether Czechoslovakia signed a document in particular
because I do not know the answer to that.
