Day 056 - 28 Nov 94 - Page 10
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you actually prepared some notes?
A. Yes, I have some notes following receipt of that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is absolutely no reason why you should
not have those in the witness box; it is a practice which
other witnesses, for instance, Ms. Dibb, as I recall, did.

MR. RAMPTON: Where would we find your notes?

THE WITNESS: There is a box next to Mrs. Brinley-Codd there
which has the note in.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are not being asked to disclose them any
more than Ms. Dibb were; they are just a sort of aide
memoir to your evidence.

THE WITNESS: It is a black edged thing there. It is the black
edged copy. Also, it would be helpful if I might have a
copy of Mr. Theo Hopkins's actual notes because then I can
compare my notes against his.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you look at blue volume 1B, pale blue, if
you look in section C of pale blue volume at No. 4?

THE WITNESS: Section C is Vicki Caroll.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. C, and then 4. I think Ms. Carroll is
1.

THE WITNESS: Could I be referred to the actual page, please?

MS. STEEL: Page 4, I think it was.

THE WITNESS: I have found the statement.

MR. MORRIS: I have, if it helps the court, the Helsinki Report
from 1993, the official report. I will read it directly
from the report, on page 26 of the report, resolution H2.
It is the second one, the quote is identical:
^
"Biological diversity means the variability among living
organisms from all sources including, inter alia,
terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and
ecological complexes of which they are part. This
includes diversity within species, between species, and of
ecosystems".

Is it "echo systems" or "ecosystems"?
A. However you would like to pronounce it.

Q. The first quote was: "Forest resources and forest land
should be sustainably managed to meet the social, economic,
ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of the present and
future generations".
A. My Lord, that statement which appears in Mr. Hopkins's
report and is a direct quotation from the Helsinki, I would
have said, is the current wisdom on this subject. My only
point, I think, and I see this in my notes here, is that
ecological sustainability was seldom, if ever, on the
agenda of either government or industrial organisations
