Day 054 - 24 Nov 94 - Page 10
does not represent a broad picture of foods that we all
and, in particular, children are being encouraged to eat.
So, in that sense, yes, it is a limited range of foods and
with its emphasis on those which are high in fats and
sugars. I am sure -- I assume -- sorry, I am just unclear
as to -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Keep your voice up.
A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: What do you think the effect of that is likely to
be? Perhaps you have, kind of, touched on it already, but
the effect on children of having only a limited and you
would say the more processed types of foods advertised?
A. The effect is going to be to make these fatty and
sugary foods more attractive and more desirable to children
than those which are not advertised.

Q. Was there anything else on that survey you wanted to refer
to? I do not know whether you dealt with McDonald's
position -- we did, sorry. Was there anything else on that
survey?
A. No, I do not think so.

Q. Right. Is it right that recently you have done a third
survey?
A. Yes, there is a third survey that has been carried out;
it has not been published in full yet.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Was there any similar survey before 1990?
A. There have been other surveys carried out by other
researchers; one survey that has been published and is in
the documents here was carried out by Dr. Brian Young.

Q. You thought 1990 and 1992 showed, broadly, the same ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- figures? What I am asking for, is there anything within
your knowledge which would show whether, for instance, in
1988 or 1986 it was again much the same as 1992?
A. The studies that were carried out earlier are hard to
compare. The study that was conducted by Dr. Brian Young,
for example, was only concerned with sugared food products.
So, to that extent it is hard to compare. The study that
has yet to be published in full which was carried out this
year again shows a very similar pattern to the one in 1990
and 1992.

MS. STEEL: That was a study by the National Food Alliance
again; is that right?
A. The National Food Alliance will be publishing that,
yes.

Q. Perhaps while we are dealing with these studies it would be
appropriate to turn to that. It should be behind
Ms. Dibb's statement, I think. I am not sure where it
would be in the bundle but that is what it looks like.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you hold it up?
