Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 24
calories from fat?
A. I am not sure what you are referring to.

MR. MORRIS: We can move on from that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think we can, yes, because we have had
quite a lot of evidence on it already from people with
expertise in the field.

MR. MORRIS: If we look at just a couple of points, to get them
out of the way. It is at a bit of a tangent -- no.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just sit down for a moment and take stock of
where you are and where you want to go next.

MR. MORRIS: If we go to page 402 in the pink bundle VII,
Advertising bundle, tab 19; this is the 1990 OPNAD Annual
Report, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. This is the Chairman's Letter, Paul Sweeney?
A. Yes.

Q. He is still chairman?
A. No, he is not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is an annual thing?
A. Yes. They are elected on an annual basis.

MR. MORRIS: The fifth paragraph down says:

"America's tastes are changing. Concern for diet, reduced
fat and healthy foods are 'in', not only today but for the
future. People have come to us for our great food for
35 years and they will continue to do so. We have taken
giant steps with changes in the content of our food."

Then it says: "As I write this, McLean Deluxe is being
announced to the world. 91% fat free and 100% delicious
taste. This is what our customers want and we did it."

So the McLean Deluxe is a response to people's concerns
over fats and healthy food; is that correct?
A. Yes.

Q. "Giant steps have been taken," it says there. When it
says, "Concern for diet, reduced fats and healthy food are
'in'", do you think he is trying to imply that that is
just a fad, a trend?
A. Again, I cannot tell you, when he wrote the letter,
what specifically he meant, but I believe he certainly said
that there is more concern about it.

Q. McDonald's has often had criticism, has it not, over the
nutritional content of its food?
A. Yes, we have had criticism.

MR. MORRIS: If we go to pink volume VIA. We are going to stay
on this volume for a little bit. We can take that other
volume away now. Tab 36.
