Day 044 - 02 Nov 94 - Page 45
and promote a worldwide food service corporation and make
profits out of the children?
A. No. I think most of those other characters are in the
business of entertaining children, as well as selling and
promoting those characters as well. If you go into any toy
store, I think you will see those characters available, as
well.

Q. Yes. But they buy the toys because they like the
characters, do they not? There is no ulterior motive?
A. There is no ulterior motive in how we use Ronald,
either. Ronald is very clear: he represents McDonald's.
We like the child to like ronald mcdonald and like the
experience at McDonald's. They reinforce each other.

Q. Have you ever said to any parents -- in your recollection,
can you think of a single document where McDonald's
Corporation has told parents or children: "Do not forget,
ronald mcdonald is a strong marketing tool, and we are
using him to exert phenomenal influence over parents to
bring you in, so that we can make profits out of you"; have
you said anything like that to-----
A. I do not believe we have used those exact words, but
I believe that parents really understand who Ronald
McDonald is and how ronald mcdonald is used. We spend a
lot of time talking to parents to make sure that they agree
with the use that ronald mcdonald is put to and that they
like the advertising and they like the way that Ronald is
portrayed.

Q. I notice in that TV ad about rainforests, booklets as a
free promotion; yes?
A. Yes.

Q. There was a ronald mcdonald in it. It was not just a
booklet, was it, concerned with rainforest protection; it
also had images of ronald mcdonald in it; is that correct?
A. I do not remember. It could well have, but I do not
remember if it did or it did not.

Q. It showed ronald mcdonald. In other words, these free
educational booklets, where you said you would like to have
an educational theme occasionally in your ads, are in fact
also promoting ronald mcdonald and the Corporation?
A. Well, part of the booklet is -- in many cases, Ronald
is presenting that booklet as well, yes.

Q. So some of your educational materials are also promotional
materials, are they not?
A. They include McDonald's logos and McDonald's
characters, yes.

Q. So that is the real reason, is it not: that you are, in
that case, for example, distributing books, educational
books, with pictures of ronald mcdonald in them, because
the real reason is that you are promoting the company by
doing that?
A. Yes. There is no reason why we have to have any kind
of promotion or educational tool. We could do the
promotion with or without it, but we feel it fits in within
