     1        Organisation has indicated that a diet high in fat and
     2        saturated fat in particular, and low in fibre, has been
     3        identified as a principal culprit of the rise in these
     4        diseases, especially in countries not used to that kind of
     5        diet, where it is becoming prevalent.

     7        Bearing that in mind, when the World Health Organisation
     8        says that the prevention or the reduction of such diseases
     9        is a social responsibility, would you say that your
    10        department's and the McDonald's Corporation's promotional
    11        strategy considers it has a social responsibility in what
    12        it is promoting?
    13        A.  Again, within the context, I am not familiar with the
    14        pamphlet that you talked about.  It is my personal belief
    15        that McDonald's food -- I think I have mentioned this
    16        before -- can be part of a well balanced diet, and I assume
    17        (and can only assume) that that is true everywhere that
    18        McDonald's product is provided, whether it is inside the
    19        United States or outside the United States.

    Q.   Is it true that you have had US government subsidies for
    22        your US international marketing of your products?
    23        A.  Subsidies?  I am not sure what----

    54        it last night, but remember that this was an issue, but it
