Day 040 - 21 Oct 94 - Page 34

  Q. This gives .01 per cent, does it not, one in 10,000?
       A. Yes, indeed.

  Q. You would not accept that?
       A. No. As I say, I have read the studies from which that
figure derives, and I find them seriously methodologically
flawed for the reasons which I will spell out if I prepare
       another document.

  Q. Sorry, I was distracted, which documents are you talking
       about?
       A. I was given to understand -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If he prepares a further document.

MR. RAMPTON: I have already asked that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And if Ms. Steel or Mr. Morris decide to ask
to recall him, then he will include his criticism of the
       one in 10,000 figure.
       A. Indeed.

MR. MORRIS: Could I say, if it is helpful, Mr. Rampton
inexplicably missed an important paragraph on the first
page of that document which suggests that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Put it in re-examination. Put a flag in it
       and put it in re-examination.

MR. RAMPTON: Do you want me to read the one about children
       because I certainly will?

  MR. MORRIS: If you like.

MR. RAMPTON: I will read the italics at the side: "If you
think you or your child may be suffering from some sort of
food intolerance, what can you do? Small children are much
more likely to react badly to some foods. Again, exact
numbers are not known. But surveys suggest that about one
child in 10 is affected. Although eight out of 10 affected
children seem to be over the problem by the age of five,
more research is going on to help this large number of
       sufferers". Quite right.

Can I ask you to turn over to the next page of this
document; it is the last bit I want to refer you to, under
Coping with food intolerance, right-hand column: "In a
very small number of cases, usually involving peanuts or
other nuts, the allergic reaction may be life-threatening.
If sufferers of nut allergy are at all worried about their
health they should consult their GP". Has work been done on
       nut and, particularly, peanut allergy?
       A. I believe that there is some work currently underway.
In the last few weeks I received an invitation to a
conference discussing that matter. This follows the tragic
death, I am not sure -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We heard about it. It sounded a most tragic
       matter.
