     3        A.  Yes, indeed.  There are only two slightly confusing
     4        issues in my original statement, that is, the Royal
     5        College of Physicians' Report on diet and coronary heart
     6        disease.  Work on that began in 1974, but the report was
     7        not published until 1976.  It was in 1976 that the
     8        coronary prevention group was founded.

    13        A.  Yes.  In the last paragraph of my original statement
    14        there was an error, which is largely my fault, due to the
    15        fact that there were two NATO workshops; one in 1986 and
    16        one in 1989, and the 1986 workshop was the one which made
    17        the recommendation referred to at the bottom of that
    18        paragraph.  1989 was the one which I provided a copy of a
    19        paper that I presented and which at the meeting in 1989 I
    20        referred back to that 86, and it is not clearly stated in
         this paragraph.

    24        A.  The recommendation came from the 1986 meeting.

    31        recommendation starting in line 3, is it?
    32        A.  It is based on the same evidence, the NATO workshop on
    33        dietary fat and disease held in Selvino, Italy.  That is
    34        incorrect -- it was published in 1986 -- made the specific
    35        recommendation that food and agricultural practices
    36        associated with the high mortality from heart disease,
    37        breast and colon cancer of western countries should not be
    38        exported to developing countries where these diseases were
    39        at that time not a problem.  This was a specific
    40        recommendation which was published, as a result of this
         conference, in the proceedings.

    52        read), there were some parts that I wanted to get you to 
    53        elaborate on or go into more detail.  Could you start by
    54        giving some indication of when the links between diet and
    55        cancer first started being made?
    56        A.  Yes.  Actually, Sir Richard Doll -- I think the court
    57        has probably had a sight of his original thesis -- in the
    58        early 50s, when he first made the statement about the link
    59        between smoking and cancer, in the same thesis he
