Day 022 - 12 Sep 94 - Page 24
be a commentary on that report. Could you enlighten us?
If you look at the "Abstract" on page 1153, internal page,
it has a comment on the Committee -- "The Committee on
Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer of the National Academy of
Sciences recently evaluated the role of diet in
carcinogenesis".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You can see, if you look at the last page of
tab 62, it has a reference to it, No. 1.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. Do you know, Dr. Arnott, whether that report
led to recommendations sort of backed by the US
government?
A. I do not know.

Q. If I can just read out ----?
A. This is a regularly quoted paper, of course.

Q. Yes. It was a very widely respected paper, was it?
A. Well, I think people would say it was an interesting
paper.

Q. The National Academy of Sciences, is that a very
established body in America?
A. It is an established body, yes.

Q. Just to go back to the Abstract: "The Committee", which
I will call it, "recently evaluated the role of diet in
carcinogenesis. Both epidemiological and laboratory
evidence suggests that a high intake of total fat
increases susceptibility to cancer of different sites,
particularly the breast and colon. In epidemiological
studies frequent consumption of certain fruits and
vegetables and in laboratory experiments some components
of fruits and vegetables" -- I read that completely
ungrammatically.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In any event they appear to decrease the
incidence of cancers in various sites.

MR. MORRIS: I am just reading to catch up with myself here.
It does say in the Abstract, the second to last sentence:
"Interim dietary guidelines to reduce the risk of cancer
were proposed in accordance with these conclusions." But
we have not those diet guidelines so -- just give me one
minute to get my thoughts.

If we look at the bottom of what is actually the third
page in my copy here, I think it is page 1154?
A. 1154?

Q. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Second page of the article of the actual
script.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. "Interim Guidelines: '... the committee
recommends that the consumption of both saturated and
unsaturated fats be reduced in the average U.S. diet'."
They talk about reduction to 30 per cent. It says: "'The
