     1
         Q. Going back to your visit to Sun Valley poultry on the
2 subject of lighting -- you may have answered this
already, I am not sure -- do you know whether the lighting
3 on the unit you visited was typical of all of Sun Valley's
              units or not?
     4 A. I do not know.

     5 Q. Right.
              A. But I was -- there was surprise expressed when we said
6 we thought it was high relative to the industry. That
implies that it was normal for the company.
     7
         Q. In terms of the ----?
     8 A. Their company policy.

9 Q. Yes, but are you talking about in terms of all the farms
that supply Sun Valley or their own farms?
10 A. As I understand it -- please ask Dr. Pattison for
confirmation -- they only supply their own birds they
11 kill. They are the sole supplier in the case of
broilers. They do not buy in much from private, I believe
12 they do not buy in from private farmers, but I am open to
correction on that. Is that your understanding?
    13
MS. STEEL: I thought you said something about other farms.
    14
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just speak from your own knowledge. No
15 doubt we will hear a lot more evidence -----
              A. I am trying to be helpful.
    16
         MS. STEEL:   I am not trying to contradict what you said;
17 I just thought you had said something previously about
              other farms, that is all?
18 A. Not in the case of poultry.

19 Q. Right, OK. You say the lights were on 24 hours a day. Is
that right, or was it 23 and a half hours a day or what?
20 No, it does say 24 hours a day in your statement, but
I was just trying to clarify it.
21 A. I would say that figure is more reliable than my
              memory.
    22
         Q. Is it generally advised that it is a good idea to have a
23 period of darkness every day, so if there is a power cut
the birds do not become alarmed?
24 A. That is one reason for having a period of darkness,
              yes.
    25
         Q. But, as far as you know, it was 24 hours a day the lights
    26 were on?
              A. That is correct.
    27
         Q. Why is it that -- we do not have sunlight 24 hours a day,
28 so why are the lights on 24 hours a day?
              A. I suggest you address that question to Dr. Pattison.
    29
         Q. Right.
    30
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know of an animal welfare reason?
