Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 26

     1
MR. JUSTICE BELL: If they are members of the broiler
2 production working group, does that mean they work in some
capacity within the broiler industry for someone who is
3 rearing and/or selling broilers for profit?
              A. Could you repeat that question? I am a bit confused
     4 by it.

5 Q. Do the starred ones mean they work for what I will just
              call broiler companies?
6 A. No, it does not.

7 Q. Of some kind? It does not?
              A. No. The composition of a particular working group can
8 often be disconnected or divorced from the ----

9 Q. You could have a pure academic in there, for instance?
              A. This is true.
    10
MS. STEEL: So Mr. Shields, you do not know?
11 A. I cannot give you his background.

12 Q. Whether he is a farmer at all?
              A. I do not know what his background is. The other
13 person on that committee for part of the time was
              Mrs. Harrison.
    14
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Presumably, the aim is to get a broad span
15 of people who have an interest?
              A. And people who can afford the time because this is an
16 unpaid position, who can afford the time to contribute and
have the determination as well, drive and determination.
    17
MS. STEEL: We said Mr. Staines is certainly involved in pig
18 farming. Do you know, is it right, that he actually is
involved in -- well, his business is involved in
19 manufacturing equipment or selling equipment for intensive
pig production such as farrowing crates?
20 A. I thought he was more in the business of farm
buildings. I do not know in the case of farrowing crates.
    21
         Q. So there is a fair bit of influence on this committee or
22 working group from people involved in the -- well, the
              farmers?
23 A. Right. Did we decide where Mr. Shields fits in?

24 Q. I understand he is connected with farming, but you said
              you did not know?
25 A. Well, if we accept that, if we do, then let us do a
              head count:  Berry, no, so that is one no; Pattison, yes;
26 Shields, yes; Staines, yes; Harrison, no; Haxby lies in
              between.
    27
         Q. Right. But there is certainly a fair amount of input
    28 from----?
              A. Industry -- that is correct.
    29
         Q. Industry, which might affect the settling of the
    30 recommendation?
              A. It may well do.
