Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 24

1 Q. Sun Valley, that is at 36.7. Could you describe the
composition of the working party that agreed to have these
2 recommendations at 34 kilograms per metre squared?
              A. It is the Farm Animal Welfare Council Working Group
3 you are referring to, correct? If it was, it was chaired
              by Mr. Paul Staines.
     4
         Q. The working party for the FAWC Group?
5 A. That was chaired by Mr. Paul Staines.

6 Q. What does he represent, any particular body, or is he
              involved in any way?
7 A. The people on the Farm Animal Welfare Council are
chosen principally because of their interest in farm
8 animal welfare. The overall composition of the committee
is there is an attempt to make it a balanced composition
9 in terms of people who are strongly motivated in terms of
animal welfare, people who have a leaning towards the
10 industry, scientists and people who, for example, are in
enforcement. Paul Staines, his particular background, it
11 is best to ask him, but, as I understand it, his
background, he has been in farming. He may still have a
12 farm enterprise. He is either a consultant or
manufacturer to do with farm buildings. He has obviously
13 an interest in farm animal welfare; that is why he was
              chosen.
    14
         Q. When you say "he used to have a farm" at least, was that a
    15 broiler farm?
              A. I believe it was pigs, but I am open to correction.
    16
         Q. Do you know roughly how many people were on the working
    17 party?
              A. I can remember some individuals. We can add them up.
18 It would be best to get the report because this is given
in the preface of the report.
    19
         Q. Yes, it has. If you want to look at this document it is
20 in the defendants' second supplementary list.

21 MR. RAMPTON: Can you give me a number?

    22 MS. STEEL: 27.
              A. Could you give me a number?
    23
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You will be given one, hopefully, in a
24 moment. What is the document called?

25 MR. MORRIS: Report on the Welfare of Broiler Chickens. FAWC.
              April 92. (Handed).
    26
MS. STEEL: It is on page 27 of that document.
    27 A. Yes.

28 Q. The ones that are starred are the members of the broiler
              production working group?
    29 A. Yes.

30 Q. Mr. Berry, do you know what his involvement is?
              A. He is the enforcement officer for Somerset County
